Well, it's been a crushing few months...we finally got my mom into a managed care home. My sister has not been a big help. She don't seem to think that I can do anything right. And when I don't agree with her, she tries yelling at me, figuring I will give in to her louder voice. This is what my dad kept on trying to do with me, and I give my sister the same response I gave to my dad...I just hang up on her.

She has come through the old trailer home, and she has taken anything of value. All my mom's jewellery, etc. And she leaves me to clean up the mess she left behind...Well enough of that BS...

Luckily, I have some truly wonderful friends who have been helping me clean up things.

Mentally, the only thing that has kept me together has been music...playing guitar...and doing things like learning how to play Kashmir by Led Zep. I know *how* to play it now, I just need to practice enough to be able to play it well! I also have picked up a miniKaos Pad, and now a Volca Keys portable analog synthesizer, both by Korg. I've been really impressed with Korg, who have been coming out with these wonderful, affordable musical instruments. I'll have to post some audio files soon of me playing around with the new stuff...

And now on to the food segment of the show...

Tonight, I have discovered the wonderful thing called garlic butter. Earlier today, I used a slice of the bar of garlic butter to grease the frying pan to make a hamburger....very yummy! Next, as a late night snack...take some buns, spread some garlic butter on them, and then sprinkle with shredded cheese, pop into the oven for a few minutes, and you have truly fresh and wonderful garlic cheese bread!

That's it for now!

A new interesting cross between a ukulele and a dulcimer made by Canadian guitar maker Godin. It's made by their subsidiary Seagull, and it's called the Merlin. Now I don't know if it's named after the fish, or the magician. but I am guessing the latter. Here is an intro to it, and then an example of someone actually playing it.

Oh, and it's inexpensive, at $129 CDN!! I might even be able to afford one!

I"ve been thinking a fair bit...yes, I know that it is dangerous...but I retrospect, I think I am going to be staying in Ottawa for a while. Between my family obligations, and the need to learn a bunch of things musically, it would be much easier to do so here. After that, I will have to sit down and consider things once again.

Things this weekend changed my mind. I may go into them later...

Well, it's about a week since I got my left hand operated on. I had been having some tingling and loss of feeling on the tips of my hands, and my doctor recommended that I have the surgery done, especially since I am not employed at the moment. The surgery was one of the most entertaining surgeries I have ever had! It was done on local anaesthetic, so the surgeon started chatting....and we almost immediate dropped into Science Fiction, and it turns out that he is a huge science fiction fan! So, when I go in to have bring him a flyer for CAN-CON. This year, our guest of honour is Jo Walton. And we have a new chair this year. I've stepped down as my mom and my mental well being have, I feel, degraded my performance as chair, and I Derek Kunsten was interested in chairing. I had hoped Pope Laskmi was going to take over, but she as far to much going on in her life at the moment. So far, Derek is doing OK, but Laskmi pointed out that Derek probably didn't realize how much work she an I did behind the scenes. But, it Derek does a decent job, it will mean that CAN-CON will have a good chance of outliving it's founder's involvement. That is something that a lot of organizations fail to do.

This past Tuesday, I went down with Laskmi to the Beats & Boards gathering. Basically, it is a social event at a cafe where they play board and tabletop games (card games, etc). It was a lot of fun.  I know that I have for the past year or two become more and more of a recluse...but not intentionally. So I am working on getting out more. This was one of a number of events I hope to maybe attend regularly to help stave off reclusiveness.  The other part of this is that they have live DJs playing music during the event. I am looking at doing a DJ stint, and doing it all oldskool electronic...Vangelis, Jarre, Kitaro, Carlos, Tomita, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk etc. and them maybe move into older danceable  electronic music, like remixed Kraftwerk, Rational Youth and the like. We will have to see.

As soon as my hand heals, I have two projects. I have someone who wants me to digitize their record collection, and I want to start recording music. I am looking at approaching this from two directions...first starting with acoustic guitar and laying down tracks, then adding to them with synth. The second is to lay down electronic rhythm tracks, and then add synth and guitar over them.

So, I am slowly trying to put myself back together...a piece at a time....

Well, I am feeling somewhat better these days. In December I bought myself a Yule gift of a Firewire/USB Audio interface. A nice Behringer with lots of inputs and outputs. So I get it home...and don't look at it for a few days. But when I do, I start testing it out...and there is a bit of noise on the left channel...and nothing I do can eliminate it. So I got a dud. Bring it back to the store, as it has a 3 year warranty. They have to send it to Montreal...since it needs it's motherboard replaced.  But Montreal turns out doesn't have any MBs in stock...so, they end up having to be shipped a new one....from their NA headquarters in....Nevada!

So, I finally got it back about a week ago, and finally unboxed it today. It seems OK. Tomorrow I will try some recording with it. I have lots of ideas for songs that I want to record..but I will probably warm up by doing some covers first.

Music, and writing science fiction is helping me a lot.

Plus, I have some good stuff on the horizon....I am going to be able to get what they call "respite" care...meaning they will take my mom into a temporary placement in a seniors residence for a week or two. When that happens I will finally be able to get a whole night's sleep!!!!! And as much as I love my mom, it is very wearying to have her ask me if there is anything she can do  up to half a dozen times an hour!

Add to that, I end up watching so much TV, that I am sure that my brains are slowly liquefying and will shortly start to slowly drain out through my ears...It is so tiring dealing with my mom, that I am doing something I never did before...I fall asleep reading!

Well, that's about it for now...

This afternoon, my dad died.

He had a massive coronary rupture, and probably died very quickly. He had been having what he thought was a back ache on the left side most of the morning, and absorbing jr and heading pads were  not helping. The reality is, he was probably having a heart attack, and didn't know it.  He died in the washroom, he was just getting ready to take a shower. As my sister said, he left the world the same way he came into it, naked!  My mom had been taking a nap, and when she went into the washroom, found him on the floor. She poked him with her foot, and then with her hand, and found him cool, so she went and put a blanked on him...when he didn't get up or respond...she called 911. The ambulance came, and they called the police I guess.  They couldn't reach me because my mom in her upset state couldn't remember my number. They couldn't reach my sister, since she works in a place where they don't allow you to use your cell phone, and  that was the only number they had for her. But her husband had her direct office number, and had heard from one of my cousins. My aunt heard about it before I did, and sent me an email, which I noticed shortly after it arrived. I immediately went up and asked my housemate if he could drive me over, he kindly said yes. In my rush, I forgot to reply to my aunt...I had to apologize to her later in the day for that.

My sister got her first, and found that an Ottaw Police officer had stayed with my mom until my sister arrived. Must thank them for that. When I arrived around 4 pm,  my dad was still on the floor in the bathroom. So I got to see where he had died. We had to call around to funeral homes to get someone to come and take the body.

While we were doing this, Mandy, one of my cousins who is close to my sister came over to lend her support. My friend [livejournal.com profile] popelaksmi came over to be with me after 6. While my sister and Mandy dug through my dad's papers to find various important things while [livejournal.com profile] popelaksmi and I went up to the DQ for some food and ice cream. During this time my sister was looking around for phone numbers of friends and relatives. About 5 Shortly after we camminutes after I got back, I looked for, and found the address book. My sister started calling, while  I took care of my mom.

I have more to write, but  I am too tired right now. I will try to post more later...

First of all, this excellent parody of The Litany Against Fear:

“I must not FB. FB is the time-killer. FB is the little-death that brings total procrastination. I will not facebook my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the FB has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
And then this...

Great version of Wow...that caused some...controversy....But I guess that was only from people who never listened to the lyrics before...in this version of the dance presentation, she makes a certain line very explicit...

Someone took the original demo for Babushka, and made a video for it editing together parts from the video for the released version of the song.

End of Day...I need to crash now. Had a decent day, got to travel on a double-decker bus out to Hazeldean! Sure, the trip took nearly two hours, door to destination...but I did enjoy sitting up top, in the front row! Now, I must crash...I have a full day ahead, with with a couple of phone calls I need to make, and a laptop I need to reformat. Night!

I posted this on facebook, after dealing with my dad oncd again... My dad spent the last few days getting me to look up DriveTest centers outside of Ottawa since he says that he needs to take a seniors driver test. So I look up the info, find the closest one is in Winchester, download the maps to my phone. So he shows up today to pick me up, and asks me to drive...fine. So I start heading off to Bank St., and then he says "Where are you going?" I said Winchester. He says, no, I decided you are coming home and you can assemble the clothes rack for me. I pulled over and stopped the car. I said so you lied to me. And he said "Well, didn't you hear me when I said I hadn't decided if I am going to take the test or not". I said no, you told me, up until this morning when I called that we were going to Winchester for the drive test. "Well, I changed my mind." So I said I had to get the tools out of my van to put it up. I drove home, and went to my room to think about it, and decided I am not willing to be deceived like that. So went back upstairs and found him at the door. I told him I am not willing to be deceived, and I am not going with you. He came at me, and tried to push his way in to the house, and I slammed the door in his face, and locked it. I then called my mom to warn her he was coming home mad, and reminded her that if he hits her again, we can have the police put him in jail. She said he has been harder to get along with lately, and she had been fighting with him as well, not physically, verbally. So I told her to take care, and we hung up. I am just vibrating from the anger....I really can't handle this, and all the other things that are going on in my life. My hands were literally shaking with rage. It's a good thing that I have very little tendency towards physical violence. I am sure that many other people would have popped my Pop in a similar situation. Please excuse the pun...I'm trying to defuse my own anger. It might be time to load up CounterStrike Source, and blow away a few things...

So, today, I went to the eye doctor for a lookover of my Macular Dengeration problem. Of course, this included having those horrible drops put in my eye to dilate them...and despite the fact that it was a cloudy, rainy day, I still had to put on my sunglass clip-ons and pull my baseball cap way down to prevent too much light from hurting my eyes.

And the verdict is...there has been little or no progress in the degeneration of my eyes! It seems that the AREDs vitamins I am taking twice a day *are* helping! I am happy with this...or at least not more depressed...I am still going blind, just at a much slower rate...
