Saturday At Torcon 3
Aug. 31st, 2003 04:34 amWell, today was an eventful day!
First, I slept through an alarm, which was supposed to wake me up so that I could attend the pre-Aurora awards gathering at 11:30 am, and then the actual awards right after that...but I only made it to the awards...wow, has Canadian Fandom ever grown! There must have been at least 200 people there! Rob Sawyer one an Aurora, and so, I believe, did Paul Valcour. He certainly deserves one! He is the most under-appreciated hard-working fan in Canada. The amount that he has contributed to the Auroras over the years is amazing...but he gets no credit. I give him a great deal of credit...and he is a nice guy too!
Following the awards, I went to a guitar workshop, and I learned a great deal! Wow. I now have picking patterns that will be great to practice, and contribute a great deal to my guitar playing, esp in the folk flavoured music.
After that, I headed up to the consuite where Popelaskmi was...she bascially took over the "quiet" consuite, and has been doing her usual outstanding job. The two of us then went over to the convention center to buy some buttons from Nancy, the Button Lady. Shameless plug here, go to http://www.nancybuttons.com/, and start reading the buttons...and make sure you have a bit of money to spend...not a lot, but maybe $20, since I am sure you will find some buttons you will like...trust me! But on the way to the Button Table on the dealers area, we stopped and voted....Popelaskmi for the worldcon selection, and me for the NASFiC...since Charlotte was bidding for it. It turned out that Charlotte lost by 6 votes!!!! ARGHHHHH!!!!
While the Pope was voting, I ran into Andrew Levin, a Fannish fixture in Canada and East Coast fandom. We chatted for about 10 mintues before I headed over to find The Pope, and vote. After voting, ended up buying 27 buttons, with 23 being mine. I also got a bumputer sticker for tailgaters to put on my van.
The Pope had to head back to the consuite, but I hung around ,and ran across John and Joanne Hall, people I used to know from my TAPA days, and I haven't seen in about 10+ years. Don Kingsbury also walked by, and stopped to chat. I then decided some food would be a good idea, and went over to a chip wagon, and got a wonderful plate of chip wagon fries. I finished them up in about 10 minutes, then headed for the internet lounge. I checked my email, and found a third instance of a piece of mail with the subject, "A WinXP Patch"...needless to say, this is a virus, but since I was running Linux, it didn't bother me...so I called work to let them know that on Monday they have to call all of our customers to tell them about the new worm, and the fact that they *SHOULD NOT* open it!!
I then went back to the Hotel, and I hung around in the Consuite with the Pope, had a few interesting conversations, including one about ownership and Dune. Gave a call SLR, and he came down to the hotel to hit some of the parties with me. And there was some good parties! But at the Ad Astra party, we ran into a good friend of mine, Judith, who was here for the con from England! I hadn't expected to see her! She looks really great, having lost some weight. She then told me there was a Wiccan ritual happening at 10:30...and we had to hightail it over to the convention center to catch it....which we did. SLR headed outside to answer a call from a client, so missed the Circle, and headed home.
It was an interesting ritual, done in the WCC style, but since the Dick and Tammy show is attempting to highjack ADF, they have started to integrate some ADF aspects into their rituals...usually, when you open a ritual, you go around and "call" the quarters, which are either the 4 elements, or 4 deities that represent said elements, or in some cases, the Arch Angels who represent said elements. But this Circle, they called both the elemental nature spirits, and the Deities. But the people running the ritual were actually doing magick, and use the energy to consecrate two swords for ritual use...I personally found this a bit offensive, since they didn't as our permission before the ritual. I prefer to know what my energy is going to be used for before I have to committ it. But this is the WCC, and the "Priesthood" has been programmed to expect their eager little non-priesthood to do whatever they say. This later manifested when, in ending the Circle, the Banished Dis and Freya...and Dis in particular, didn't like the treatment, as the temperature of the room immediately dropped about 10 degrees! I've made my personal appologies to the two of Them...
After that, it was back to the consuite, where I ran into Nancy, the Button Lady, and we sat and talked about Celtic Reconstructionism for about an hour. She was tired, and headed off then, but I eneded up chatting about Linux to someone, and that lasted until the Pope kicked us out of the consuite. So I drove back to SLR's place, and stopped at a combo Country Style Donuts and corner store, where I got a great ham and cheese mini-sub, and some donuts. From there it was back to SLRs, and now writing up the day on this journal.
I'ts now 5:13, and I need to get to bed, since I am very tired...hopefully, I will not sleep through my alarms again, since I am supposed to meet Judith for Lunch at 1 pm.
Goodnight!
