New uranium mine approved for construction

PRINCE ALBERT, SASK. - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has approved construction of a new uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan at a site the company says has the second-largest uranium deposit in the world.
Cameco has been talking about building a mine at Cigar Lake for almost 20 years.
Cameco spokesperson Lyle Krahn said the Cigar Lake area has the second- largest uranium deposit known in the world today.
"For Cameco it means a significant increase in the amount of uranium and ultimately a significant amount of income," he said.
Development of the mine is a joint venture between Cameco, Cogema and two Japanese companies.
Krahn said the partnership will have to decide if they will, in fact, begin construction.
In addition to generating between $350 million and $400 million worth of construction, the mine could provide about 200 jobs for the next 30 or 40 years.
If all goes as planned, the mine could be in production by 2007.

Now I would prefer a nuclear power plant to a coal burning plant any day...but when they talk about openning a new Canadian mine in the second largest desposit in the world, I ask "Why?"
As it is, for nuclear power we don't need a lot of fuel. The CANDO technology, is fairly efficient in it's use of uranium. So Canada has very little use for uranium. And even the US doesn't have a large need for it either...there hasn't been a new nuclear plant built in at least a couple of decades. Although I could be wrong...this *is* a blog, not a New York Times story.
What I see is the possiblity is that Mr. Bush & Co are going to be ramping up the nuclear arsonal to try and make some money now that they have the oil situation mostly under control...or so they think.
We know he wants to build new and more bombs...to bomb who? China? Russia? Iran? Himself?!?!?!
The only thing that a new nuclear arms race can do is highten the fears of the US public, and make it even more complacent to the strong arm tactics of Bush and people like him.
Wanna bet the Nuclear Clock advances this New Years eve?
I don't want to play that game either.
