JOY!

Many moons ago, I used to use a Linux desktop windowing manager called Enlightenment, written by Rasterman. It's stated aim was to bring the look and feel of Bladerunner to the Linux Desktop. Well, it has gone through many chances over the years, and was on hiatus for a long time...but now, it has returned, and is on the verge of releasing the non-beta version of Enlightenment 17. And boy, is it nice!

Of course, it is pretty...but it is also fast! I've been unhappy with both Gnome and KDE, finding both of them kinda bloated memory hogs that are slow. I just downloaded and installed a series of packages for e17 specifically set up for Slackware 10.2. And what a difference!

Windows snap, changing virtual desktops is *fast*. Starting Eterm under KDE, there was a noticable delay, under e17, it's there almost before the sound of the click from the trackball! The default theme is silver and gold, and is nice. I've yet to customize things much...but the basics are already set up, browser, term, email, etc. It has a menu bar that is a bit like the one on Mac OS X...but it seems to have a "golden apple" that is behind the tool bar to indicate which one you are selecting.

I'll get some screen shots up in a little bit...But I am having fun again!
