As a musician, former studio owner, and sometime record producer, I firmly support people downloading all the music they can...then supporting their favourate artists by attending their concerts (where most band's make most of their money), buying memorabilia from the band directly, and buying the album, in that order of preference. The only people who consistantly making money off of music are the record companies, not the talented people who create the music.
The music industry screws the artists, hard. Unless an artist has three or more hit records, they may never make a dime off of their record sales, and many times end up owing money to the record company *and* no longer owning the rights to the music they created! I know too many good artists who are no longer making music as they would have to give any money they make to pay off their recording contracts, or are still obliged to record only for that company, and can't play the music they created.
