Imagine if they made a musical about the Burning Times...

You don't have to imagine...it was made in 1987!

The group was originally called "Dollie", but their record company changed their name after their first few albums to "Dollie de Luxe". Like many European artists of great skill, they won the Eurovision Song contest, but it would take their fourth album, "Rock vs Opera" until they they tasted fame in Canada and the US.

Hailing from Norway, and contemporaries of the group "ah-Ha", they were very popular in their home country. Consisting of Benedicte Adrian and Ingrid Bjørnov, who had been friends since they met in a sandbox at the age of 2 years. Both received classical training in music, but obviously, pop was in their blood. They signed their first record contract at the age of 15, and released 3 self-composed albums before leaving high school. "First Act” (1980), their debut release sold over 50,000 units, earning them a gold album and Norwegian Grammy. Their third album contained their Eurovision wining song "Lenge Leve Livet". Has Brittany Spears ever written any music?!?!

Most North Americans didn't hear about them until the release of "Rock vs Opera", with it's club favourate, "Queen of the Night/Satisfaction". It was an interesting mix of Opera and Rock, playing one off against the other in an uptempo beat. I remember an amusing segment during the promotional tour for that album on Much Music with DJ/Musician/Songwriter Chris Ward, where he attempted to duplicate some of their vocalizations...and failed, amusingly.

After that album's success, they decided to work on a full-fledged musical combining both rock and opera, and the result of that was "Which Witch". It takes place in the context of the time, but with bits and pieces of modern-day Wicca occasionally creeping in. I remember when I first showed the video to the song "Eternally" to my pagan friends, who all when gaga over the way the singers did a pentacle with their arm movements, in a very different way that is traditionally used. It was also evident that in addition being musically influence by Kate Bush, they, or their choreographer, were influence by KB's dancing.

If you would like to see the video for "Eternally", as well as some of the other songs in "Which Witch", you can go to the website at http://www.whichwitch.no and check them out...but here are the lyrics. Enjoy!

Eternally

FIRST SPIRIT:
I sew your shadow with my hair, I bind your shadow unto me
By day or night you shall remain
before the Triple Goddess three
I bind your shadow unto me, Maiden, Mother, Hecate
Dawn and noon and night black sea
free you are, but bound to me
and you are mine eternally

SPIRITS:
I sew your shadow with my hair, I bind your shadow unto me
By day or night you shall remain
before the Triple Goddess three
I bind your shadow unto me, Maiden, Mother, Hecate
Dawn and noon and night black sea
free you are, but bound to me
and you are mine eternally

I sew your shadow with my hair, I bind your shadow unto me
By day or night you shall remain
before the Triple Goddess three
I bind your shadow unto me, Maiden, Mother, Hecate
Dawn and noon and night black sea
free you are, but bound to me
and you are mine eternally
