Well, I've decided to change my sleep schedule...somewhat radically.

I ran across an interesting concept called the "Uberman Sleep Schedule", although more technically known as Polyphasic Sleep. Read about it here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyphasic_sleep

Basically, rather than sleeping for a long time every day, you sleep many times a day, for short sleeps, running about 20-30 minutes each. The basic schedule is that you take short sleep periods at midnight, 4 am, 8 am, noon, 4 pm and 8 pm.

There are many possible advantages to this schedule. First is more work time. And another is the elimination of sleep apnea.

The disadvantages are that it will not work for a long time, or I won't be able to adapt to the schedule.

The basic idea is that your body is a highly adaptable system. The main thing you need to get your rest during your down time is REM sleep. You could sleep for 12 hours a day, but if you don't get REM sleep, you will never truly be rested. One of the most well known problems that cause this lack of REM sleep is sleep apnea. I used to suffer from this. Until recently, I have not had much problem with it, as it seems directly related to my weight.

At my worst, I was up to 320 pounds. I have been down recently to around 240 pounds, but I think I have been creeping up above 250. I find that I am eating more since I stopped taking my anti-depressants. Add to this, due to my asthma, I find it hard to do something as simple at go out and take a long walk in this weather. So I have put on a bit of weight...and that has triggered my sleep apnea again.

So, I have decided to embark upon this sleep schedule as I am not working. The extra time I gain will enable me to maybe try some other exercise possibilities, and work on some projects I have going, and not sleep for 12-16 hours a day I am sleeping currently. If it also helps with the sleep apnea, so much the better.

It's around 7:30 am, and I am about to try my first "power nap" at 8 am. Then get up, and head off to my parent's place out in BC. I'll try and regularly update this to let people know how I am doing on this.
