I downloaded Knoppix 5.1.1 both CD and DVD editions not only because they are the newest, but because it has the Beryl windowing system in this release, and I like eye candy! But first, I had a problem...
I was going to re-install the 64 Studio first, as I seemed to have goofed it up by installing some Debian packages on it...well, the installer in 64 Studio/Debian is not very clear, and I accidentially re-partitioned and started to format a 60 Gig drive I have...I rebooted the system after about 5 seconds....the drive was full of things that I had recently downladed like the AMD 64 Port of Slackware (Slamd64), episodes 1-9 of the second season of Sleeper Cell, the Knoppix 5.1.1. DVD image, etc. Stuff that was replicable...but I would have to download it all again. So, I took a chance, and repartitioned it the way it was before, one partition for the whole drive, and ran fsck on it...and it WORKED! Admittedly, everything is, of course, in the Lost+Found directory...but with a bit of effort, everything should be back as good as new.
So, now that I had the Knoppix DVD image back, I re-verified the MD5 sum just to be sure, then I burned it to a DVD, and booted the system...only to find it doesn't really support Nvidia cards...so, I rebooted, went to run level 2, installed the Nvidia proprietary (OMG! I tainted the kernel of a innocent Debian disk! THE HUMANITY!!!), and ran startx...and up came Beryl.
It's nice, but obviously a work in progress...some of the features ran fine, but were too tanj fast. But realistically, except for the 3D stuff, I find that Enlightenment 17 is just as pretty, and much more light-weight on the CPU and memory. Rasterman is god!
Now, I really should sleep, but I need to get a few things ready for the Party at Willows Place (PAWP, pronounced POP!) Who Cares? party.
I may post again later if I am up...
