Red Light Cameras do not increase traffic safety...in fact, they decrease it!

From the abstract:

"Running a red light can cause severe traffic crashes especially when one vehicle runs into the side of another. Red
light cameras photograph violators who are sent traffic tickets by mail. Intuitively, cameras appear to be a good
idea. However, comprehensive studies conclude cameras actually increase crashes and injuries, providing a safety
argument not to install them."

Interesting study, especially the part that points out how insurance companies have a definite interest in having more red light cameras installed for reasons of profit. [In England, red light and speeding cameras are very common and are paid for by the same communities that benefit from the fines charged. That evokes plenty of protest by motorists complaining of being "gouged" whenever the road they use passes through a camera-prone community.]

As the saying goes, "He's not a prophet ... he's a loss." :-)
