The text in the picture is wrong. The check actually reads:
0.002 + eiπ + Σn=1 1/(2n)

Which comes out to:
0.002 + -1 + 1

OR!

$0.002


This was done by Randall Monroe, author/artist of XKCD after another user's dispute with Verizon about their data charges. He was quoted "0.002¢" and was charged "$0.002" per kB transferred. After refusing to pay on 0.2¢ difference in his bill, he eventually recanted, but wanted to make it hard for them. http://xkcd.com/verizon/
