"I'm an elitist because I think there are too many stupid people in the world. But one must not pity them; one must take an AK-47 and kill them. You just need to kill as many stupid people as you can find. " - Harlan Ellison

I used to be a great fan of Harlan's, but over the years, I've drifted away. Maybe when I was younger, I need the visions in his work. These days, I don't. Not that he has really produced much in the past while that I know of. But there is both an article/interview with him in Salon Magazine, and a documentry film that has just come out. You can read the article/interview here.

Ellison was someone who's hard to like. On one hand, he was a fantastic writer with some great ideas. On the other, he was a notorious egoist who also rode his "City on the Edge of Forever" fame into the ground.

The biggest problem with HE is that the quality of his work deserves an ego as big as his. :-)

But that is an unfair comment about "City", outside of STrek fandom, he is not known for that, but for things like "Dangerous Visions", "A Boy and his Dog", and being a consultant to JMS on Babylon 5. Now I have met the man on a number of occasions, and he is even more entertaining in person than he is in his writing. Watching him and JMS tag-team in talking about B5 was something truly amazing! Just having him read one of his stories is an event of itself!

Yeah, you're not the first one to tell me that about him. I don't know, I always got rubbed the wrong way whenever I read an interview with him or saw him on TV.

Sadly, I was never a big fan of B5 or JMS...
