As some of you know, I am a big fan of Pink Floyd. One of the ultimate Floyd expreiences was a limited release of Dark Side of the Moon done in Quadraphonic Sound. You can't get the LP, and you can't get the equipment to play it if you did, today.
So, for the 30th anniversery of Dark Side of the Moon (aka DSotM), they have remixed it in 5.1 sound...great you say...but, like that Qaud version...it is in a weird and hard to get format, the so called "Super Audio Compact Disk", or SACD. This things holds about the same amount of info as a DVD, and actually has two "sessions" on it, one is a regular Audio CD, the other is the "Super" part. But, the problem is, you need a special player to hear it. And the cheapest you can get is about $400 US. Now, the rub is that your DVD player can do 5.1 sound, and has done so for a long time. So I hope that they will release it soon on DVD 5.1, and the rest of us will be able to finally hear the masterpiece in true surround sound!
Next is something else from Pink Floyd I have been waiting for...the DVD version of Live at Pompeii! This film is one of the best and least know films that mix music and visual imagery into a unique piece of art that is greater than the sum of the two parts. This was back before there was a Much Music or MTV. Now recently, they have also released THe Make of DSotM on DVD, which basically combines the interview portions of Live at Pompeii with new interviews, plus Alan Parnson & David Gilmore "walking you through" how some of the soundscapes were built up on the album...tre-cool! But Pompeii is important for something else, it was one of the last films that were allowed to shoot in the doomed city, so it is of interest to not only musicians, but archeologiests and art historians, since some of the images of the frescos, parts of which either no longer exist, or their colors are dramatically faded due to polution, errosion, etc.
Now, I have a third piece of news...Some of you may be familar with Luther Wright and the Wrongs "hillbilly" version of Pink Floyd's The Wall, but did you know a bunch of regge artists got together and did a regge/trance-hop version of DSotM? It's called Dub Side of the Moon. I don't know much about it, but I intent to pick it up soon.
