Trinity and Beyond
Jun. 8th, 2006 03:08 amI really, really was going to try and get to sleep early...I have to get up at 6:30 or so for a doctor's appointment at 8:45...but it's 2:45, and I am still up...and it's all because of the Atomic and Hydrogen bomb. Really!
If you have never seen it, go and rent Trinity and Beyond. It is a scary movie. Not in a Horror type thing, but...well, it should scare you.
To look at an atomic explosion is to look into one of the truly evil things on this planet that humans have created. Too many people see nuclear explosions as simply a bigger bang, bit it isn't. It is a fundamentally different type of reaction. It rends the very nature of matter and energy, and I would not be surprised if it creates some damage to the fabric of space-time.
For those religions that have a concept of evil incarnate, calling it Satan, for example...I could easily believe that the essence of Satan comes into being at the heart of an atomic explosion.
It is for this reason that it is scary that George W. Bush has the ability to invoke this power, this evil; and that a country like Iran seeks this power, this ability to make a deal with evil to scare those they disagree with religiously.
I believe that a lot of the ignorance about atomic weapons comes from the fact that for the past few generations, we have been, as a planet, subverting the importance of science to today's society. Everyone doesn't need to be a nuclear physicist or biologist, but everyone should have a basic understanding of the way that many of the things we use today work, and the science behind them. It scares me when people say that the Sun is sort of like a large lump of coal burning in space, or that air conditioners "burn" Freon.
I am sure that if the people of Iran understood what their leaders were pursuing, then they would be horrified. I am sure that if some respected holy man of their religion who understands physics and watched Trinity and Beyond, they would come out with a decree that nuclear weapons are evil, and that those who pursue their development are courting the embodiment of evil on earth.
