While browsing some used computer stuff ads, I found someone selling a Linksys VoIP adaptor...for $20! Now, it is a cool little piece of hardware, because not only can I unlock it from Vonage, thus using it for any SIP based voice over IP service, it also runs Linux! I had tried Skype before on our Rogers internet connect, but I suspect that Rogers is either blocking or traffic shaping all VoIP traffic, since they have a competing service. As we are switching to another ISP, which doesn't do any stupid anti-competitive, anti-customer stuff like that, I hope to be able to try out some of the various VoIP services...which means I will be able to call people all over the planet, really cheap, or free!

Vonage always uses 3rd party adaptors, which can, more often than not, be unlocked. I also have an old vonage adaptor, but to unlock it, I need a "wardialing" program...and I haven't bothered yet...but for 20 bucks, I now have one that has a simple program that unlocks them.
