Well, I am still getting used to working again...and all the stress that my dad is putting on me about my van...UGH!

Here's the situation:

When I brought my van back with me from the US, I had to drop off the ownership certificate at the US side of the boarder, for them to make sure that it is not being stolen or anything. They said I could pick it up in a few days. Not having a lot of money, I figured that I would not need it for a while, and once I got some money together, would go down and pick it up.

Then my van died, and it has been parked for most of the time since I moved back to Ottawa. Now I am in the process of getting my van back on the road. The repairs are complete, but now I need that certificate to get my plates, and insurance. So I call up the boarder where I crossed, and they tell me I cannot simply pick it up, that I need to bring the van down to pick it up. Why, they won't say. But they do say that I have "illegally" exported the van, and may have to pay a $500 fine. I don't like the fact that they are implying I did something illegal. It makes me nervous.

But I can't get insurance unless I have the ownership certificate...and I can't drive the van down without insurance...nor can I get even a temp license permit.

Some of my alternatives are to get a duplicate certificate from NC...but I need to get my former employer to sign that I paid off the van...and they might not be willing to do so...and I would have to contact them, an unpleasant thing. But if I was able to get a duplicate, I could then get insurance, and plates, and they go and deal with the problems at the boarder.

But I am also wondering if I should get a Lawyer, and have him/her look into this. There are not a lot of resources about this on the net that have any good information.

Anyone have any ideas?

What about towing the van down using a rental truck with a hitch??

re lawyer: There is a service the Upper Canada Law Society offers where you can call a pay one time fee of something like 8 or 9 bucks. and they will hook you up with a lawyer specialized in the area you need, and local, for a half hour consult.

I don't have the number here but it's in the yellow pages under 'lawyers' - they have one of the 'visual' ads.

Much though you dislike it, you may have to call up your former employers [no, not fun-die at all :-)] and persuade them to sign off on such a duplicate certificate. It would allow you to (at least) drive the van down yourself, rather than towing it [which may cause damage to the transmission]; it may also get you "off the hook" as far as that [US federal government?] fine is concerned.

Just a thought ...
