This probably would *only* happen in Britain ... and possibly in some parts of Canada.
In the USA, they are, quite frankly, too blase about private gun use. Remember the "make my day" law passed in Colorado not too long ago? Michael Moore's comments in _Bowling for Columbine_ also come to mind on this subject.
