A couple of Bristol, England, built a house out of, essentially, scrap wood and other matierials, for about $5000.

More information here.

My father built and lived in a place like this in Bancroft for years. It had some interesting features such as moles, bats, a floor that curved to follow the bedrock, and a completely non-linear design that led to some really interesting room layouts.

It cost more than this place to build, and in the end in order to sell it he had to replace the sod roof with a normal looking one. Pity.

I remember you mentioning that before. I find it fascinating! I would have loved to see it.

So would I; I suspect that maintaining it would still have been hard.

Did he replace that sod roof with a thatch one? Or were conventional shingles used? [In England, thatch or straw roofs are still seen, IIRC.]

In the end, I fear that building houses like these would be too hobbit-forming. :-)
