My father built and lived in a place like this in Bancroft for years. It had some interesting features such as moles, bats, a floor that curved to follow the bedrock, and a completely non-linear design that led to some really interesting room layouts.
It cost more than this place to build, and in the end in order to sell it he had to replace the sod roof with a normal looking one. Pity.

In the end, I fear that building houses like these would be too hobbit-forming. :-)
