I have been going through the election results, at least for Ontario where I know mostly which ridings are rural and which are urban...and it is pretty consistant that urban ridings went either Liberal or NDP, and rural went Conservative. This mirrors well what is happening in the US. States that are mostly rural usually have a Republican majority, while more urban states are Democrat. In checking the current electoral map of the US, we see virtually all the Great Plains states, largly rural are Republican, but states like New York, California, Ohio, and New Jersey. I haven't seen a provincial breakdown yet...I am sure I will see it in the next day or so.

I think that conservatives, such as they are today, are a doomed breed. As their base in the rural areas erodes, a trend that has been happening virtually all through the existance of the US, they will no longer be elected, and will loose power. That has already happened in Canada. This is why for the past 40 years we have predominantly had Liberal federal governments. I may see about doing some research into this, and see if I can chart the urbanization of Canada and the rise of the Liberal party as the predomanant governing group on a federal level.
