Most of you know him as Montgomery Scott, or Scotty, but others called him Captain.
He had an abusive, alcoholic father, so to escape, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 19. He scored the top of his class in the Officier's Exam, and became a Captain with the Royal Canadian Artillery. On D-Day, he stormed Juno Beach with his men, and was wounded in his leg and hand. This led to his loosing of a finger. Showing the tenacity that was later the trademark of his charactor, Scotty, he rejoined the fight as a spotter pilot, and erned the title of the "craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Forces."
Like everyone that stormed the beaches on D-Day, Doohan is a hero. And after the horror of the landing and being wounded, he went back to the fight in an even more dangerous job, as a pilot! We should be thankful of people like Doohan, as they were able to help keep the planet free. That he later went on to become an actor, and be part of a series like Star Trek which has inspired many to new heights, we should be doubly thankful. I know that there are many engineers today who were inspired to become such because of Star Trek.
The fact that he is now suffering from Alzheimer's is tragic. But something that I would have expected that he had recieved already is The Order of Canada. He is an exemplatory Canadian whose work has inspired many, and is a hero too. But he has not been made a member...yet. If I can get my act together enough, maybe that is something I can see about doing. Before he is lost to us!
