I got this from [livejournal.com profile] ravenlaughing.

1. What blood group are you?

AB-

2. Do you give blood? Why/why not?

I've tried, but they always tell me they have more than enough AB- blood. Being a rare (rarest?) bloodtype, I guess that many people who have it think "I have a rare blood type, I should donate!". It is, again I believe, the universal blood acceptor for blood.

3. Are you listed as an organ donor? Again, why/why not?

I was in Canada. As they don't even have recycling of tin cans in this state unless you run around and pay people to take it away, I figured that the same would be true for recycling you body. Never pursued it. If I move back to Canada, or to a state that isn't still in the 19th century, then certainly I would love to donate that which I cannot use anymore to someone who could.

4. Would you donate an organ or other part of your body (eg bone marrow) while still alive?

If it was someone I was close to, either relative, or friend.

5. Would you consider leaving your body to medical science? Or maybe just parts of your body?

Personally, I wouldn't care. But, others need something to mourn, and my family being Christian would probably freak out if they couldn't get their hands on my body. For the longest time I though I didn't want to have a funeral, but after seeing how cathartic it was for friends who had lost people close to them, I figured it was O.K., as a last "thank you" for their being family/friends in this lifetime. As long as they have a great Irish Wake for me!

you don't necessarily have to be listed to be a donor, but you can get a donor card for your wallet. Having that and letting people you know carry one goes a long way should anything happen.

AB+ is the universal acceptor. This is because in addition to having the A protein and the B protein, the '+' indicates the presence of a third protein on the blood cell, whereas the '-' indicates the absence of that protein. If someone with negative type blood were to receive positive blood, it would be a bad bad thing because the body would perceive that new blood as an infection/invader and attack the new blood cells. Generally a bad thing and one of the reasons blood transfusions didn't work until we figured out typing.
