One of my fav authors of all time is Rudy Rucker. A math geek specializing in trans-infinite numbers and recursiveness, he has written some truly strange and wonderful science fiction over the years. Recently on http://boingboing.net he has been their guest blogger, and he recently put up this bit of wisdom...

"Twin Towers

Facts: The twin towers fell. The terrorists were Saudis. Bush invaded Iraq.

“Ah,” someone might say, “if nobody wanted to fight, we’d be invaded. Look at the twin towers. The world’s not safe.”. And I would submit that the administration’s reaction to the twin towers was exactly the wrong one. Instead of jumping into the repetitive tit-for-tat class two Israelis-versus-Palestinians mode, the government should have gone class four. What would make men kill themselves while destroying a part of our lovely New York City? What system produced them? Isn’t there a way to get in and jolt it in some totally unexpected way, something more original than rocket fire vs. car bombs?"

They almost had the right idea when they started putting out pro-American shows on Al Jazeera. A hundred Al Jazeera's, and some money towards empowering Muslim women through education and other avenues would have worked wonders.

There's another way too. I've met the most criticism for this, but I think it's a possible way. Peace. A pointed effort to turn the other cheek. Oh well. I don't see any good Christians in this government or this country buying that.

Peace *is* the best way...It's always the best way.

Fighting a tit-for-tat war is what is happening, and one of the best comments I have heard about the way armies fight wars...An army always fights the current war with the techniques of their last major war, and they almost always fail. Besides the fact that the US should *not* have gone into Iraq, they did, and now that they have broken the egg, they are responsible for it, sadly.

I agree that if they had focused on rebuilding Iraq, put more money into getting their infrastructure...electricity, phones, sewers, etc., back into shape, they would have a lot more co-operation from the public there in keeping the peace. And by educating women, and indeed, the whole population, they would do a lot to fix the damage they have already done. Education *always* helps, and I wish the US not only would do so there, but do so at home as well. The less education you have, the more likely you are to vote republican...and I have no problems with different parties, even if I don't agree with them, but what people are voting for when the vote republican, and what the republicans actually are today are very different things.

To wage war should always be the avenue of last resort, when no other solution has worked. I also agree that the so-called "good christians" in the US are totally forgetting the title of their main object of worship. One of Jesus's titles was "The Prince of Peace". Not being a christian myself, I have met some good christians, and they are nothing like those who go around claiming to be "good christians". It's like the bumpersticker I once saw "I've got no problems with Jesus, it's his fan club I can't stand!".
