Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Sep. 20th, 2004 05:30 pmLast night, I saw the movie...wow.
It was a lot of fun! It is probably the closest any movie has come to the pure enjoyment of the Science Fantasy film genre that is best personified by the original "Star Wars" movie. And that is not by coincidence!
In many ways, this film is a nod to both the sources of Star Wars, and to the movies themselves, and many other science fiction/fantasy movies. The first reference that I noticed was to THX-1138, the door of the doctor hadd the address of "1138. The rocket was from "Destination Moon", the first Heinlein movie based upon his works...The island was very reminiscent of Dagoba, including the fighter floating in the swamp. And that guy in Tibet that the evil doctor had experimented upon looked a great deal like Yoda. The "air-aircraft carriers" looked a great a lot like the Harkonen ships in Lynch's DUNE, both of which Raffaella De Laurentiis was producer on. Of course, the orithinopters help cement that connection. The Robots with the tentacles came from somewhere...but I can'tremember at the moment. Their death rays sound effect came from George Pal's "War of the Worlds".
I am going to have to see it again to continue to enumerate the number of "easter eggs" in this movie...
BTW, virtually all Lucas's and Spielberg's movies contain lots of in-jokes, references to each other's movies, and others that they admire.
